Plastic was designed to last. Yet, that durability has made plastic an environmental catastrophe—poorly disposed of and nearly indestructible.

Plastic's remarkable properties have dramatically reshaped industries from technology and healthcare to infrastructure and food safety. Imagine a world without the lightweight versatility of plastic in smartphones, or without the life-saving potential of artificial limbs and synthetic heart valves crafted from this adaptable material. Even discarded plastic has found a second life - for example, it’s been repurposed to construct over 100,000 km (over 62,000 miles) of sustainable roads in India.17 Plastic, in many ways, has become the very scaffolding of modern life.

Yet, this very indispensability has fueled an environmental crisis. While plastic builds our world, it simultaneously threatens to bury it. Over 14 million tons of plastic enter our oceans annually4 — faster than we can clean it up. It’s like trying to mop the floor while the sink is still overflowing.

Plastic's unique properties make it hard to replace in numerous critical applications, from sterile medical equipment to protective packaging. Furthermore, many plastic alternatives often carry their own hidden environmental costs, requiring careful consideration of the impact of the entire lifecycle.

Though recyclable, they require significantly more energy to produce, transport, and reprocess, leading to higher greenhouse gas emissions.18

Paper

Coatings used on paper for liquid retention complicate recycling in most current systems.19 An estimated 50 billion single-use coffee cups end up in U.S. landfills annually.19

The challenge lies not in eliminating plastic entirely, but in redefining our relationship with it – transitioning from a linear model of consumption and disposal to a circular economy where plastic is ultimately prevented from polluting our planet.

So, What Can We Do?

Solving the plastic paradox requires a collective effort across governments, businesses, and individuals. Together, we must shift toward a system that prioritizes reduction, reuse, and responsible recycling.  This includes:

Governments: Enacting policies to regulate plastic use and disposal, and incentivizing recycling programs.

Businesses: Innovating sustainable solutions, rethinking product design, and funding recycling systems.

Reducing or eliminating those single-use plastics that are particularly challenging to the environment and have practical alternatives.

Understanding the complexities of this issue is the first step toward meaningful change.
